I live in the higher elevation area near Mt. Hood Oregon, so I have a really short growing season and mostly grow cold crops and russian heirloom tomatoes due to their ability to thrive in cold climates.
This fall I have started cold frame gardening and founf some great articles on line. THere is a family in a colder area of Idaho that built a cold fram on the south side of their house and put 4 black water barrels around it. The barrel heat during the day and keep it from freezing at night. They grow nearly everthing but corn in it. Cool idea. I use heirloom vegatable seeds I purchase through Baker Seed Catolog and Seed Savers, then save my seeds year to year and make a compose pile. Gardening all this food is nearly free and gives me many options for food storage and money saved.
